Construction Project on Cooper Drive to Begin Mid-Week
Work is expected to begin mid-week to construct a bicycle lane on a section of Cooper Drive. The bike lane will replace existing sharrows (shared lane arrows) from the intersection of Sports Center Drive and Cooper Drive to just past the Kentucky Educational Television building.
The project is expected to be completed within a few days and traffic flow will be maintained. However, traffic will at times be reduced to one lane, so motorists and cyclists should expect slowdowns and exercise caution in this area.
UK's on-street bicycle facilities currently includes eight miles of bike lanes and 2.2 miles of sharrows. This latest project will convert approximately 770 feet of sharrows to bike lanes on both sides of the street, allowing for safer bicycle travel to and from campus along this corridor.
The work is jointly funded by the UK Bicycle Advisory Committee via UK Transportation Services and the City of Lexington.
"This project is part of our ongoing efforts to make UK a place where students, employees, and visitors feel safe and supported for choosing cycling as their primary mode of transportation," said Sandra Broadus, Alternative Transportation Manager for UK Transportation Services. "Receiving Gold status recognition as a Bicycle Friendly University from the League of American Bicyclists last year was a nice pat on the back, but there's still room for improvement. I'm excited for some more projects that we have lined up in the future to continue making campus a great place to explore on two wheels."
