Repaving Work on Elizabeth Street Lot to Start this Week

The Elizabeth Street South Lot (formerly Press Avenue South) is being doubled in size, with an additional 80 new employee intermediate parking spaces. The lot is scheduled to be repaved and restriped on Thursday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 2.

The lot was expanded by approximately 24,000 square feet and will provide much needed additional parking in the vicinity of Elizabeth Street Garage (PS #6). A new entrance and exit will also be available off Elizabeth Street.

Weather permitting, contractors will repave and restripe the lot late this week, requiring a temporary closure. Completion of the project is expected to take approximately four days, with the lot reopening early Monday. However, please be aware that this work is weather dependent, so those dates could change slightly.

The parallel parking spaces along the existing access road leading from Elizabeth Street Garage will not be impacted and will remain available.

“We think this project will make a big difference and ease some of the parking congestion on this side of campus,” said Sarah Nikirk, director of UK Transportation Services. “We know that the Elizabeth Street Garage tends to fill early in the mornings, so these additional spaces are much needed.”

This $850,000 project began when the university purchased an apartment building and demolished it to make way for the lot expansion. Contractors performed underground storm retention work and completed a concrete retaining wall as part of the project.
