Ride in the Lexington Bike Challenge
May is National Bike Month, and the UK Bicycle Advisory Committee is encouraging the campus community to participate in the annual Bike Lexington calendar of events.
The eighth annual Lexington Bike Challenge is a fun and free incentive-based cycling initiative presented by the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Downtown Lexington Corporation and Love to Ride.
This year’s Bike Challenge utilizes Love to Ride, a web-based, user-friendly platform that allows for ride uploads and has the ability to sync with several popular ride tracking apps. It’s quick to register your department or unit team at www.lovetoride.net/lexington, though individuals are welcome to participate as well. Businesses and organizations of all sizes will compete to see who can log the most bicycle miles, highest number of rides and greatest percentage of participation during the month of May. All UK units are invited to participate and to form teams based on their departments. Recreational rides will count as well as work and errand-related trips. The competition runs through Wednesday, May 31.
One way to rack up challenge miles is the “Life is a Cycle” group ride on Monday, May 15. The ride will depart from Broomwagon Bikes + Coffee at 6 p.m. The eight mile ride will cover all of the types of bike facilities in Lexington. While open to anyone, this ride is especially geared towards new bike commuters. For more information and to register to participate, visit http://lifeisacycle.bike.
Feedback Sought on Area Walking and Biking Conditions
The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government are in the process of developing a pedestrian and bicycle plan to improve walking and biking conditions in Fayette County and Jessamine County.
Members of the campus community are invited to provide feedback via a short, anonymous survey, as well as via an interactive online input map where participants can indicate areas that need improvements. The groups will also hold several public meetings, the first of which will be held on Tuesday, May 16 at West Sixth Brewing from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
