Transcript Avenue Lot to Close on Monday
The Transcript Avenue surface lot, located at the corner of Transcript and Journal avenues, is scheduled to close on Monday, May 12, to enable site preparation work to begin for the University’s new Environmental Quality Management Center (EQMC).
The Transcript Lot has approximately 55 employee intermediate (E) parking spaces in it. To minimize the impact to permit holders, UK Transportation Services will convert the metered (pay-to-park) on-street parking spaces on Press and Leader avenues to E-intermediate permit parking spaces. This change will add approximately 25 E-intermediate spaces to the inventory. The electric vehicle charging space on Press Avenue will not be impacted by this change.
In addition, department staff have been working over the last month to relocate as many as 100 core parking permit holders in the vicinity of Press Avenue Garage -- effective July 1 -- when additional spaces become available in the UK HealthCare Garage expansion. These changes should result in additional parking availability in Press Avenue Garage, which is an E-intermediate permit parking structure.
The 36,000 square foot EQMC building project was approved by the UK Board of Trustees and is expected to be completed in August 2026. This closure will also affect the sidewalk adjacent to the Transcript Lot.
According to University documents:
- The Environmental Quality Management Center (EQMC) will serve as the University’s sole facility where all hazardous waste originating on campus is accumulated and processed per regulatory requirements prior to off-site shipment.
- This $25 million EQMC capital construction project will replace the existing facility, which is scheduled to be demolished due to the planned expansion of the Albert B. Chandler Hospital. The new facility will house Environmental Health and Safety Division staff and will ensure uninterrupted hazardous waste management operations and continued compliance with federal and state environmental regulations.
If you have questions about these changes, please email UK Transportation Services or call 859-257-5757.
