Winter Bike to Campus Day is Wednesday, Feb. 9

Cold weather is no excuse to give up on cycling to campus, whether you dig winter vibes or shiver all season. Each year, UK Transportation Services recognizes cyclists who brave the winter weather to cycle year-round during Winter Bike to Campus Day. This year’s event will be held from 7:30am to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9. Stop by our tent at the Mining and Minerals Research Building Plaza to celebrate any-weather cycling as an effective and efficient mode of transportation.

Portion of Hospital Drive to Close Temporarily

A portion of Hospital Drive located between University and Veterans drives will experience periodic road closures through May to facilitate construction on Cooling Plant #1.

Farm Road to Temporarily Close to Thru Traffic

Farm Road will close to thru traffic beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25, through Friday, Jan. 28, for work associated with an electrical upgrade project.   Employee and visitor parking areas adjacent to the Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center, the Orange Lot, the E.S. Goodbarn Visitor Lot, and the large and small Gluck Equine Center lots will remain accessible from University Drive. The pedestrian crossing from the large Gluck Lot across Cooper Drive will also remain accessible.

Winter Break Brings Changes to Parking, Transportation

The upcoming winter break will impact campus parking control and bus services, both of which change significantly during breaks.   This year, the winter academic break begins on Saturday, Dec. 18, and runs through Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022. Official UK staff holidays are Friday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022.   Please see below for more details about parking, bus schedules, and holiday parking passes.   UK Employee Parking Lots & Structures

Green Route Service Hours to Change

Beginning Monday, Jan. 10, the campus Green Route will have new hours of service. Service will remain unchanged from 6:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. After 10 p.m., riders will now be able to request On Demand Service for transportation to and from the West Blue Lot Shelter at Kroger Field and their residence in Greg Page or Shawneetown.

Free Covered Parking Available Over Winter Break

Keep your wheels under cover this winter! UK Transportation Services is offering free, covered storage for cars and bicycles on a first-come, first-served basis. Students with a valid UK parking permit who wish to move their vehicles to Cornerstone Garage (PS #5) -- a covered parking structure – for the duration of winter break should stop by our office to pick up a free holiday parking pass.

'Tis the Season...to Prevent Bike Theft

Did you know that theft of bicycles on campus is somewhat seasonal? Thefts tend to increase in the month or so prior to the end of academic breaks, according to the UK Police Department. One issue is that bicycles are relatively easy to steal unless they’re properly locked. Keep your bike safe by following these best practices:

Winter Break Airport Shuttle Sign Ups Now Available

Can you believe that winter break is less than two weeks away? If you need a ride to the airport, remember that UK Transportation Services offers free rides to regional airports. Students, faculty, and staff can take advantage of rides to and from Kroger Field to Blue Grass Airport (LEX), Louisville International Airport (SDF) and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). This service is offered in partnership with the Student Transportation Council.

A New Breed of Bird Has Landed on Campus

You may have already noticed that Bird e-scooters on campus have evolved, with the older model being replaced by a new version that’s more robust and heavier on extra features. Bird, UK’s preferred e-scooter vendor, recently swapped out its older version with its newest line, Bird Three. These scooters feature a variety of upgrades designed to make the scooters eco-friendlier and to heighten their appeal to both experienced and new riders. While the fleet number is smaller on campus during the winter, these Birds are expected to be available all season long.
